Back in the mid 1990's about halfway into my 22 year clinical career I'd become a pretty good clinical dentist but was a disaster as a businessman. In 1990, I became the first dentist in Massachusetts accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. I subsequently served for the next six years as an accreditation examiner for the AACD. I completed the entire continuum with Dr. Peter Dawson at the Center for Advanced Dental Studies both didactic and hands on, as well as, a series of courses didactic and over the shoulder by Dr. Bill Strupp and many other such mentors from whom you may have taken courses as well.
He scheduled a court date for me for 9 a.m. the following Monday. Three days from meeting him I was to file bankruptcy. On Saturday I hear from my divorce attorney (who by the way, was the guy who originally suggested I see the bankruptcy shark), "Tom... you can't file bankruptcy. Your ex-wife's divorce attorney just called to inform us that if you file on Monday he will be motioning the court on Tuesday to dissolve your home and your dental practice."
With bankruptcy off the table and no other "bailout" option, I dug in my heels and was determined to make my practice the financial success that it could and should have been. Unfortunately back then there was no one source as you've found here to answer the myriad of questions... a place to "mine" the "gems" which can take a healthy practice and skyrocket it to stratospheric success both professionally and financially. Gems that could take an ailing practice and rapidly infuse new life. Professional success must include financial success in order to be sustainable long term.
Autonomy by Age 46
I chipped and carved my way down a brand new uncharted path. In many cases I created strategies and tactics from scratch... within a truly miraculous three short years I'd paid off what in today's dollars would be close to a million dollars worth of debt and mortgage. During my last five years in practice I was making just over twice the annual net income of the average general practitioner... yet practicing only one day per week (I chose Mondays... since there are so many Monday holidays!)
By the age of 46 I sold my practice and could have retired forever (if I chose). Instead of retiring, my wife Elizabeth and I have dedicated the last 12 years (and hopefully many more to come) to helping other dentists. During my last couple of years in practice, my father, who owned and operated a dental practice less than an hour away from mine, was suddenly diagnosed with terminal cancer.
